What Is a Novena?
A novena (from the Latin novem, "nine") is a form of devotional prayer said on nine successive days, asking for special graces or intercession.
The tradition dates to the nine days the Apostles and Mary spent in prayer between the Ascension and Pentecost — the very first Christian novena.
Novenas may be directed to God, the Holy Spirit, Our Lady, or the saints, and are prayed for healing, guidance, protection, or the repose of souls.
"These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus." — Acts 1:14
Tips for Praying Novenas
- Same time each day. A consistent time anchors your prayer routine and deepens focus.
- State your intention clearly. Speak your petition to God at the opening of each day's prayer.
- Pair with Scripture. A daily verse related to the novena's theme enriches meditation.
- Pray with others. Joining a prayer group multiplies the spiritual power of a novena.
- Trust God's timing. God always answers — sometimes in ways we do not expect.
